Philip Nelson in Details Magazine

October 02, 2008 By: Philip Category: Entertainment, Family Safety, Interview, World Gone Wild No Comments →

I know you are as shocked as I am to read that headline.. I was interviewed for an article called “The Yuppie Survivalists”, in this months edition of Details Magazine. :)
It’s a well written article about how more mainstream people are starting to invest in food storage as a hedge against future uncertanty. I was given the honor of the last quote in the article, so skip on to page 3 and scoll down to the bottom. ;)

Flood Uproots City Government: TriCaster Keeps Channel on the Air

June 26, 2008 By: Philip Category: Family Safety, Interview, NewTek, Technology, World Gone Wild No Comments →

Flood Uproots City Government: TriCaster Keeps Channel on the Air
TriCaster enables Des Moines, Iowa city government to communicate with residents during flood emergency

San Antonio, TX — June 26, 2008 — NewTek Inc., manufacturer of industry-leading video and 3D animation products, today announced that its TriCaster™ portable live production studio is currently being used by Channel DMTV7, the city government station of Des Moines, Iowa, to produce and air daily press conferences and updates on the flood emergency after being forced to evacuate the City Hall production studios. Currently producing from the Des Moines Central Library, TriCaster is powering three press conferences and two thirty to sixty minute shows daily that keep residents abreast of flood-related developments.

Press conferences included addresses from Governor Chet Culver, Mayor Frank Cownie, Polk County Supervisors, as well as updates from the Emergency Operations Center, comprised of officials from fire, police, civil engineers, public works, Red Cross, etc. The production staff has moved operations twice since they left the City Hall studios on Wednesday, June 11. Currently broadcasting from the Des Moines Central Library, TriCaster is powering the channel’s entire daily production schedule, live news updates and council meetings.

“TriCaster has been an asset to those trying to safeguard life and property under unpleasant and unsure circumstances,” said Amelia Hamilton-Morris, Chief Communications Officer, City of Des Moines. “In fact, we’ve heard that people watching our TriCaster-powered channel have had no idea we are not in our normal studio. We’re looking to include TriCaster in our new studio update when we settle back in to City Hall.”

“In times of crisis, there is much information that needs to go out to the public and traditional broadcast outlets just can’t give the necessary amount of airtime. Technology like TriCaster allows city governments and first responders to broadcast emergency information 24/7,” said Philip Nelson, SVP Strategic Development, NewTek. “Adding in the flexibility to broadcast on television/cable, web stream and digital signage, more people can be reached when it really counts.”

TriCaster shines at DHS S&T Event!

June 03, 2008 By: Philip Category: Family Safety, Interview, NewTek, Technology 1 Comment →

Today was amazing. TriCaster was chosen as the presentation tool of choice to switch a day long conference for the Department of Homeland Security! The highlight of the day was getting to switch the keynote by the Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff.

The setup was pretty cool! We had two TriCaster STUDIOS feeding two Sony 4k projectors and everything was running through Command and Control interfaces from RGB to bring a TON of data together on two large screens..

Jan Ozer on TriCaster “All I can say is WOW!”

May 06, 2008 By: Philip Category: Interview, NewTek, Technology No Comments →

During NAB 2008 in Las Vegas, I had the honor of demoing TriCaster Broadcast to the industry legend, Jan Ozer. I’m excited to say that he liked what we showed him and posted the following show report on Digital Content Producer.

Excerpt from article:

“Let me say up front that I’m continually amazed at the functionality NewTek builds into their little boxes. Seems like I’m not the only one, as the NewTek rep rolled off customer after customer, like NBA, Fox Sports and the NHL.”

NAB - Day 2 (It feels like day 9) - Boxing Legends

April 16, 2008 By: Philip Category: Entertainment, Interview, NewTek, Sports, Technology 2 Comments →

It’s amazing how draining a tradeshow can be. Whenever I think I’m too busy and have too much to do.. I always think of the scene in Jerry McGuire when he comes home after being fired, checks his answering machine and hears “No New Messages”… I’m thankful that TriCraster is such a hot product and that I have so many people interested in seeing it that I was booked all day today (30 minute meetings) with no lunch break and still didn’t get to all of the key accounts and press that wanted to see our new offerings.

I had the opportunity to interview two legends of boxing today at the NewTek booth, Sterling McPherson and Mike McCallum.

Nelson interviews boxing legends McCallum & McPherson during NAB 2008

Wanted to let you know a little about these two legends of boxing and all around great guys.

Mike McCallum: Boxing Hall of Fame; 3 Time Champion — WBA Junior Middleweight Champion, WBA Middleweight Champion, WBC Light Heavyweight Champion; Record: Won 49 (36 KO), Lost 5, Drawn1. He was never knocked out.

Sterling McPherson: Called “Manager of the Decade” by HBO Sports in 2000, and “Manager of the Year” by the IBF in 1996 and 1997. He is also the editor of Boxing Illustrated.

It was an honor to meeting Sterling and Mike and the webcast today was a huge hit with their fans at the show and on the web.
