Lewis C. Nelson 1920-2011

L to R: Clara "Nanny" Nelson, Amanda Nelson, Lewis "Pop Pop" Nelson, Riley Nelson (Niece), Philip Nelson, Noel Nelson, Natalie Nelson, Sage Nelson, Chase Nelson (Nephew), Phil Nelson

Services for Lewis C. Nelson, 91, will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Homer, LA, on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at 10:30 A.M. Burial will follow at the Arlington Cemetery in Homer.

Visitation will be at the Rose Neath Funeral Home in Homer on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Mr. Nelson was born in Grand Junction, CO, on January 30, 1920. The son of Claude and Myrtle Nelson, he spent his early childhood on a ranch in the Little Delories area of Glade Park, CO. His family moved to the Appleton area near Grand Junction where he attended the Appleton school from the seventh thru twelth grades, graduating in 1937. He attended Western State College where he received his private pilot’s license through the civilian pilot training program.

In the fall of 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Upon graduating from flight school in Sept 1941, he was married to his childhood sweetheart, Clara Feiler on December 26, 1941. He was assigned to the flight test section of the Army Air Corp, primarily at the Lockheed Aircraft Factory in Burbank, CA.

In 1945, he was replaced by Major Ira Bong who was the all time leading ace for the military. This was to have tragic consequence, as Major Bong was killed a few weeks later flight testing a P-80 Jet aircraft.

Upon discharge in 1946, Mr. Nelson returned to Lockheed Aircraft and worked on the test program of the P-80 until the completion of the contract. He moved to El Dorado, AR, in 1948 and worked for McMillian Petroleum, Lion Oil Co., and Murphy Oil Co., where he spent twenty seven years, fifteen years as manager of the aviation department.

He retired in 1983 and moved to Lake Claiborne and later to Arcadia, LA. He enjoyed fishing, boating and traveled extensively in their motor home. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and elder for many years.

The pride of his life was his family. He is survived by his wife Clara of 69 years; two sons, Robert Lewis Nelson and wife Mary of Lake Claiborne, LA, and Philip Noel Nelson and wife Donna of Monroe, LA; and a daughter Patricia Ann Campbell of Lafayette, LA; eight grandchildren and nineteen great grand children.

Pallbearers will be Robert L. Nelson, Jr., Jon Robert Nelson, Craig Campbell, Philip Nelson, Jr., Jay Nelson, Dan French and Chris Biggerstaff.

Special Thanks from the Nelson family to Homer Memorial Hospital, HealthSouth and Dr Sam and Camille Abshire, Dr Moore and Dr Clint Bulter.

In lieu of flowers, please give to the First Presbyterian Church in Homer or the Japan relief fund.

SXSW Artists Come Together in Austin to Support Victims of Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami

Taylor Hanson interviews Michael Stipe

Taylor Hanson interviews Michael Stipe for the SXSW4Japan 12 hour Telethon

A Livestream telethon spearheaded by HANSON and in partnership with SXSW has been organized by world class musicians gathered in Austin for the event.

The hosted telethon was drawn together in a short 24 hour period through tremendous efforts from all involved, with the aim of offering assistance and support to victims of the magnitude 8.9 earthquake on March 11th, 2011. The earthquake and resulting tsunami has left countless dead and homeless across Japan and the Pacific region.

With the greatest minds in music, film and interactive media gathered in Austin for the week, HANSON and SXSW have partnered to capture the rare opportunity for the world of music to impact the world of those in need. Artists from across the globe are gathering in a downtown studio location to make inspiring music and encourage viewers to donate funds to the American Red Cross.

Friends and acquaintances from across the music industry will gather from 12 pm Saturday to 12 am Sunday to donate their time – and music – to support the cause. Those who can’t be in Austin can still join the event live by tuning into a Livestream online telethon featuring back-to-back performances and chats by notable and new artists, driving the audience to donate to the American Red Cross.

Scheduled performances and appearances include Michael Stipe of REM, John “JoJo” Hermann of Widespread Panic, the North Mississippi Allstars, The Boxer Rebellion, HANSON, Johnny Polygon, Andy Grammer, Stephen Kellogg, Anna Nalick, Jackson Harris, Charlie Mars, Bowling For Soup, Stephen Kellogg, An Horse, AWOLNATION, The Parlotones, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Rayland Baxter and many more.

All proceeds from the event will go directly to the American Red Cross. Featured songs from the event will be sold as a part of a benefit project.

Fans can find out more by going to www.SXSW4Japan.org or on twitter @sxsw4japan.

All donations can be directed to the American Red Cross by calling 1-800 RED-CROSS or simple $10 donations can be sent by texting RedCross to 90999.

The 12 hour live webcast will be powered by NewTek TriCaster, LiveU and Livestream.com

SXSW Article: Northeast of here, S.A. techies impress

TriCaster powers Ignite SXSW webcast

TriCaster powers live webcast of IgniteSXSW from Austin Music Hall

TriCaster is generating quite the buzz at SXSW. Yesterday as I was driving into Austin for the Ignite SXSW event, I had the honor of doing a phone interview with San Antonio Express-News writer, Valentino Lucio. Check out the article about the influence that San Antonio tech companies are having on SXSW. Yes.. NewTek gets some love!

Still, there are companies that want more exposure. San Antonio-based NewTek is using the event to showcase its portable live-production and 3-D devices. Philip Nelson, senior vice president of strategic development at the firm, said that NewTek’s TriCaster, a portable production device will be used to broadcast live many events for SXSW participants, including Taylor Guitars and MTV.
“We haven’t scratched the surface,” he said. “The Internet is growing, and people can do so much now with a product like ours. It’s a revolution, and we’re here at the beginning.”
