Microsoft Helps Police Analyze Crime Scene Computers

Microsoft device helps police pluck evidence from cyberscene of crime
By Benjamin J. Romano
Seattle Times technology reporter

Microsoft has developed a small plug-in device that investigators can use to quickly extract forensic data from computers that may have been used in crimes.

The COFEE, which stands for Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor, is a USB “thumb drive” that was quietly distributed to a handful of law-enforcement agencies last June. Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith described its use to the 350 law-enforcement experts attending a company conference Monday.

The device contains 150 commands that can dramatically cut the time it takes to gather digital evidence, which is becoming more important in real-world crime, as well as cybercrime. It can decrypt passwords and analyze a computer’s Internet activity, as well as data stored in the computer.”

Lewd and Disturbing Photos of Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana

When I first saw that headline about the Vanity Fair Miley Cyrus photospread, I was a bit concerned. Most of the kids I know look up to her and I was disappointed to hear that she had fallen into the same trap as many child stars.

Miley Cyrus and her father, Billy Ray

After seeing the photos, I’ve come to the conclusion that this more of a PR stunt than an actual public outrage over inappropriate photos of a teenager. It’s amazing how easily the mainstream media was lured into this blantant PR ploy to sell more magazines.

I would never let any daughter of mine pose in photos like these but they are no different that the photos found in an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog.

Armed Store Managers stop Gunman!

Story from PalmBeachPost.com,

“Police reported Tuesday morning that Grant, 73, entered the store through the exit despite manager Marino Hernandez’s warning not to enter that way. The confrontation escalated, Grant drew a handgun; assistant manager Roberto Espinal drew his handgun. Hernandez also pulled a gun. Grant backed out of the store, firing three times as he went, the arrest report states.

The managers, who witnesses said never returned fire, ended up surrounding Grant, who hid behind a vehicle while continuing to fire, police report. Grant eventually surrendered his weapon to the managers, once they told him police were on their way.”

If these brave managers hadn’t been armed, I wonder how things would have turned out? As mentioned in the story, the two armed managers were able to subdue the gunman and disarm him before police arrived!

Gas to reach $10

It seems that lately my blog hasn’t included the most positive and interesting news. I hate to admit it but things are getting pretty scary out there!

The New York Sun has been busy lately with some VERY interesting stories on the economy, food and fuel supplies.

In today’s article entitled “Gasoline May Soon Cost a Sawbuck – Big New Shock at the Pump Forecast by Two Analysts“, they discuss what to many was an unthinkable price of $10 per gallon of gas in the United States..

From the article:

“The forecasts calling for a jump to between $7 and $10 a gallon are based on the view that the price of crude is on its way to $200 in two to three years.

Translating this price into dollars and cents at the gas pump, one of our forecasters, the chairman of Houston-based Dune Energy, Alan Gaines, sees gas rising to $7-$8 a gallon. The other, a commodities tracker at Weiss Research in Jupiter, Fla., Sean Brodrick, projects a range of $8 to $10 a gallon.”

DC Burglaries up 21% – Police Blame on Economy

From the Washington Post:
Allison Klein and Dan Keating

“Burglaries are on the rise in the District, with police blaming the souring economy as a contributing factor in a 21 percent increase in break-ins over the same period last year.

Criminals are jimmying locks, kicking in front doors, breaking through roof hatches and skylights, and sometimes even sawing security bars off windows to get into houses and businesses, police said. They are hauling off computers, flat-screen televisions, jewelry, digital media players and other items, which they then sell. ”

Food Rationing Begins on East and West Coast

Something that I’ve been commenting about recently is the rising cost of food.. Today, I ready a scary story in the New York Sun entitled, “Food Rationing Confronts Breadbasket of the World“. In the article, it talks about how rice, wheat, oil and more are in short supply and that some stores are beginning to ration the staples.

Rice Stockpiles - Courtesy 620 WTMJ

Here in San Antonio, I haven’t seen rationing yet but I have noticed empty pallets in Sam’s Club. Rice, Flour and more seem to be “hot sellers” as of late. The price of cooking oil is through the roof and prices don’t seem to be leveling off.

If we aren’t already in a major recession, I’ll be shocked.. I guess the question is.. How long and how deep?

In addition to food, I’ve heard rumors that hunting ammo is going up too. This afternoon, I visited a local sporting goods store to check out this rumor.. The price of many hunting cartridges has DOUBLED!!

Things are getting scary….

We’ll I’ll catch you later, I’m off to stock up on rice.. 😉

Spurs beat Suns for Game of a Lifetime..

I was lucky enought be have tickets for today’s Round 1, Spurs vs Suns game in San Antonio. As the Spurs came out with ZERO fieldgoals almost 6 minutes into the game and were still only down by 6.. I felt it would be a LONG painful day for the Spurs.. I’m glad that my initial feeling was wrong..

Philip & Amanda at Spurs vs Suns

In double overtime, Spurs beat the Suns to go 1-0 for the playoff series.. Clutch 3 pointers from both Michael Finley and Tim Duncan (Yes you read that right, Tim Duncan) were the keys to the Spurs keeping things alive.

This was a real nail biter.. Manu hit a bucket to pull the Spurs ahead by two and the Suns were unable to hit the buzzer beater to win..

Tuesday night should be a real BATTLE!
