Father of the Electric Guitar, Les Paul dead at 94

The Wizard of Waukesha, Les Paul died in White Plains, NY due to complications from Pneumonia.

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Paul after one of his Iridium shows in New York City and I was BLOWN away by his energy and talent.

He did two shows every Monday night at the Iridium and after every show he made himself available to fans for autogrpahs and pictures. It’s funny that many of the “Fans” are celebrities themselves. During my visit, Michael Anthony from Van Halen was standing behind me in line waiting to get his Les Paul autographed.

XBox 360 – 3 Red Lights of DEATH!!

A well know and widely feared XBox flaw, the Red Ring of Death

A well know and widely feared XBox flaw, the Red Ring of Death

I’ve heard horror stories of XBox 360 owners around the globe who have been hit by the “Red Ring of Death” aka Three red LEDs.

Tonight I joined those ranks. After calling Microsoft for a repair, I learned that my XBox was out of warranty and the repair would cost $100!! A $400 game console should last MUCH longer than a couple of years. I feel that Microsoft sold a flawed design and now the customers are having to pay the price.

Now I’m debating what to do, should I burn more money on a console that has already been returned for replacement once and is KNOWN to have repeated hardware problems?

After horrible results with Windows Mobile, I dumped my PC and switched to a Mac with iPhone. At this point, I may just buy a PS3 and dump Microsoft entirely.

Would love to hear your advice, suggestions and comments!

One Can of Red Bull May Increase Risk of Heart Damage, Study Says

Yet another story linking Energy Drinks to hear problems.

Venom was the first energy drink to ship with a warning label.

Venom was the first energy drink to ship with a warning label.

A study of university students between the ages of 20 and 24 years old found that drinking one sugar free can of the caffeinated energy drink increased the “stickiness” of the blood and raised the risk of blood clots forming.

Read story HERE

In July of 2008, I made a visit to the emergency room thinking that I was having a heart attack after drinking just one Rockstar. While in the ER, the doctor and I were talking about energy drinks and I learned that almost every weekend, kids are heading to the ER after a night of drinking Bull Blasters aka Red Bull and Vodka.

Today is Duran Duran Appreciation Day

I get my “chops busted” by many of my friends who are too “MANLY” to admit they like Duran Duran and compare them to the likes of the Backstreet Boys and Insync.. There are some HUGE differences between DD and the boy bands of the 90’s..

1. Duran Duran doesn’t suck.
2. Duran Duran plays musical instruments.. BB and InSync don’t.
3. Duran Duran doesn’t choreograph their “act” In fact, DD is horrible at dancing.
4. Duran Duran writes their own music.

and finally
5. See #1

In honor of Duran Duran Appreciation Day, I wanted to share a cool DD video. Even after all these years, they can still pack an arena.

Review: GI Joe – THE must see family action film of 2009

Many people my age went into Star Wars Episode 1 with the high expectations that had been building for two decades and came out stunned by the silliness of the movie and the likes of Jar Jar Binks

Sienna Miller as Baroness

Having been raised a fan of GI Joe, I had those same high expectations going into the GI Joe movie. As we took our seats, I hoped that we wouldn’t leave the theater with that same level of disappointment that many Star Wars fans felt after Phantom Menace.

I’m happy to say that GI Joe was everything I hoped it would be and more! With a rating of PG-13, I was afraid that it got the Transformers treatment and would be chocked full of adult situations, language and other things that I wouldn’t willingly expose my 10 year old son to.

Kudos to director Stephen Sommers for keeping true to the spirit of the comic and cartoons and delivering an action packed thrill ride that is appropriate for a great Father/Son outing to the movies! The adult language and romance are kept to an appropriate minimum and movie really only earns it’s PG-13 rating due to constant action, a little gore and troopers getting blasted and burned.

For long time fans of GI Joe, Sommers threw in many tributes to the series, toys and comics. USS Flag makes an appearance, The phrase “knowing is half the battle” is uttered, “Yo Joe” is shouted and there is some sweet Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow swordplay.

In closing, I would like to urge you to take your family to see GI Joe on opening weekend and support this AWESOME movie! It’s rare that Hollywood delivers a great action film that is family appropriate… That is, If you consider a little gun play family appropriate! 😉

YO! Joe!

Early Review of GI Joe – Ain’t it Cool News

As a GI Joe fan since the day I was born, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of the GI Joe movie.. Here is an early review of the movie from the legendary film site, Ain’t it Cool News.

I was expecting this movie to be far more jokey, tons of cheese and really serious eye-rolling while groaning. Instead, what I got was a fairly straight adaptation of the script, which I always thought would work as a serviceable all-ages GI JOE movie. Although, this is a bit more violent than I was expecting. Blades can cut, death does happen in this universe, but it isn’t anything out of whack with the rating. I don’t believe there’s any foul language – and all flirtation is kept in very good tastes (ahem, BAY!)
